HIGH SCHOOL

Look forward to the high school years with confidence, enjoy the opportunities, and follow your student’s interests! Every high school student is assigned a high school counselor. The counselor will be by your side to shepherd you and your high school student through to a successful graduation.

Credits and Planning

A credit is typically 150 hours of coursework, and a half credit is typically 75 hours. A full-time student must take 4 to 8 credits per school year.

We require 22 credits for a student to graduate. To complete high school in 4 years, you should plan an average of 5.5 credits per year. Most of these are specific courses (like English I, Physical Science, U.S. History, etc.). Two or more are electives: credits of high-school-level work in subjects of your choice.

A typical year’s high school education plan will have 1 credit of English, 1 credit of math, and 1 credit of science, with several other courses to total 5 or 6 credits. Taking more credits in the first two years allows more flexibility in later years for jobs, college visits, and other opportunities.

A Typical Year

Begin planning the next school year and gathering materials in the spring and early summer. Finalize your education plan and submit the application before August. Once approved, begin work in August or September, keeping track of the days you do school work. When you’ve completed about 90 days, pick a weekday as the end date of your fall semester and prepare the grades, days of attendance, and end date for submission. In December or January, log into your Parent Portal and submit the grades and attendance.

Begin the spring semester in January, again keeping track of the days you do school work. Begin thinking about your plan for the next school year. When you’ve completed at least 180 days total and finished the material, pick a weekday as the end date of your spring semester and prepare the grades, days of attendance, and end date for submission. In May or June, log into your Parent Portal and submit the grades and attendance. Finalize your plan for the next school year and submit an application as soon as possible after May 1st.

Transcripts

To protect student records, we do not send transcripts unless requested. Make sure that Gateway has received any ACT/SAT scores as well as the student’s current grades and attendance. Generally, transcripts sent to colleges in January or February of the senior year should include fall grades.

A transcript can be requested by email (preferred), phone, mail, or fax. Requests should include the student's full name, date of birth, and year of graduation. Please give us instructions as to where to send it, and how (mail, fax, or email).

Typically, we send out a transcript within 10 days of receiving the request. Please be aware of deadlines and make requests early. Always inform us of any deadlines you’re facing.

Seniors and Diplomas

Enroll your senior early, before the beginning of the school year (August), and submit grades promptly after the work is completed. See our Important Dates page for more information such as when we expect to receive applications and grades. We will not enroll a returning student as a senior unless we have received the final grade report for the previous school year. Seniors must be enrolled for at least one semester immediately prior to graduation.

August 31st is the final date for summer session grade submission. Late grades can delay or even prevent graduation.

Seniors graduate when their final grades are approved. After approval, we’ll mail the diploma and a copy of the transcript to the address we have on file. Please allow at least two weeks to receive them. If official transcripts are needed for college, the military, or an employer, please make your request by email when you submit final grades.
